Stand on the roof of Azerbaijan. Mount Bazarduzu (4,466 m) is the country's highest peak, and this guided 3-day Bazarduzu climbing tour from Baku takes you there the right way: a proper acclimatisation day in Khinalig — one of Europe's highest inhabited villages — a night in a mountain camp at 3,250 m, and a sunrise summit push above the clouds of the Greater Caucasus. All border-zone and national-park permits are arranged for you.

Expedition highlights

  • Summit of Mount Bazarduzu (4,466 m) — the highest point in Azerbaijan, right on the Greater Caucasus watershed, plus nearby Zafar Peak as a bonus summit.
  • Khinalig village (2,350 m) — acclimatise in a 5,000-year-old stone village with its own language, high above the Guba valleys.
  • Shahdag National Park — 4x4 track across the wild Shahyaylag plateau that few travellers ever see.
  • Small rope of climbers — one certified mountain guide per 7 people, summit certificate included.
  • Permits handled — Bazarduzu sits in a border zone; we arrange the State Border Service, national park and MES (rescue service) permits for you.

3-day itinerary

Day 1 — Baku → Guba → Khinalig, acclimatisation hike

We leave Baku after breakfast and drive north — about three hours to the Guba region, then two more up the spectacular canyon road to Khinalig. In the afternoon we stretch our legs on an acclimatisation hike to the top of Kharibulbul (2,783 m) with views over the whole village. Overnight in a family guesthouse.

Day 2 — Shahdag National Park → camp at 3,250 m

A 4x4 takes us through Shahdag National Park onto the Shahyaylag plateau to about 2,900 m. From there we shoulder backpacks and hike roughly two hours to the mountain shelter at 3,250 m, then make a light acclimatisation walk to 3,400 m before dinner. Night in tents at the camp.

Day 3 — summit day → return to Baku

Alpine start at 04:00. The ascent to the summit of Bazarduzu takes six to seven hours at a steady pace; on a clear morning you can see deep into both Azerbaijan and the Russian Caucasus. Strong groups add the one-hour climb to Zafar Peak. We descend in three to four hours and drive back to Baku the same evening — summit certificate in hand.

Why climb Bazarduzu with us

Bazarduzu is a border-zone peak — you cannot simply show up and hike it. Our team handles the border permits (send us your passport details at least 5 days ahead), plans real acclimatisation instead of a rushed dash, and climbs in small ropes with local guides who have summited dozens of times and know the mountain's fast-changing weather. That is why our groups summit — and enjoy it.

Fitness & gear

This is a non-technical but demanding trek: no ropes or crampons in the summer season, but you need solid fitness for a 6–7 hour ascent above 4,000 m. If you can comfortably hike 6+ hours, you can train for this. Bring: 60–70 L backpack, broken-in mountain boots, waterproof insulated shell (Gore-Tex or similar), warm sleeping bag, trekking poles, headlamp and thermal base layers. Want a warm-up first? Try our Garanohur Lake forest hike a few days before.

Good to know

  • Season: June – September (the safe snow-free window; other months on request for experienced groups).
  • Duration: 3 days / 2 nights, round trip from Baku.
  • Group: 2–7 climbers per guide; private expeditions available.
  • Difficulty: hard — the pace is steady and the summit day is long.
  • Permits: passport details required at least 5 days before departure.
  • Cancellation: free up to 72 hours before the start; weather-related date changes are always free.
