Azerbaijan Hiking Tours
4 tours · 125 traveller reviews · local guides
Azerbaijan hiking tours by Tourister — a local operator running guided hikes and trekking trips across the country: easy forest trails and mountain lakes near Baku, hikes to the world's largest mud volcanoes, high villages of the Greater Caucasus, and the flagship 3-day Mount Bazarduzu summit expedition (4,466 m). Small groups, certified mountain guides, transport from Baku and — where the border zone requires it — all permits arranged for you.
Why go hiking in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan packs an astonishing range of trails into a small country: semi-desert badlands and bubbling mud volcanoes an hour from Baku, waterfalls and subtropical forests in the Talysh mountains around Lerik, and serious 4,000-metre peaks in the Greater Caucasus above Guba and Gabala. Most trails are blissfully uncrowded — on many of our hikes you won't meet another group all day.
Types of hiking tours we run
- Easy day hikes from Baku — the Garanohur lake forest trail, the Toraghay mud-volcano hike and the Shahdili Spit coastal trek through Absheron National Park: no experience needed, back in the city by evening.
- Summit expeditions — the 3-day Bazarduzu climbing tour to Azerbaijan's highest point (4,466 m), with proper acclimatisation and border permits handled.
Every tour on this page is a genuine hike — you move on your own two feet. Prefer to reach the same mountains on four wheels? See our scenic day trips to Shahdag, Guba & Khizi, Guba & Khinalig village and the Lerik waterfalls 4x4 tour — they involve only light walking.

Prices, difficulty and what's included
Group day hikes start around 60–90 AZN per person; the 3-day Bazarduzu expedition is 870 AZN. Every hiking tour includes transport from Baku, a guide who knows the trail (not just the road), and honest difficulty grading on the tour page — from "any fitness level" walks to the hard summit push on Bazarduzu. Group camping gear is included on multi-day trips.
Best season for trekking in Azerbaijan
Lowland and forest hikes run year-round. The high Caucasus season is June to September — that's when Bazarduzu and the Shahdag plateau are snow-free and the mountain villages are at their greenest. Book summer weekends early; groups are capped for safety.
How booking works

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience for hiking in Azerbaijan?
Not for most of our hikes — the lake and mud-volcano trails suit any reasonable fitness level. Mountain treks and the Bazarduzu expedition are graded on each tour page so you can pick honestly.
What is the best hiking season in Azerbaijan?
Forest and lowland trails are good year-round. The high Caucasus — Khinalig, Shahdag, Bazarduzu — is best from June to September, when the passes are snow-free.
Are permits needed for trekking in Azerbaijan?
Only in border zones (for example Mount Bazarduzu) and national parks. On our tours all permits are included — we just need your passport details a few days ahead.
What should I bring on a day hike?
Broken-in shoes with grip, a 1.5 L water bottle, sun protection and a light rain layer. Everything specific is listed on each tour page; expedition gear can be rented in Baku.
Can you organise a private hiking tour?
Yes — every route on this page can run as a private tour on your dates, including a private Bazarduzu expedition for groups of two or more.
