The Strangest Landscape Near Baku
Picture a grey, lunar plain dotted with miniature cones that gurgle, hiss and spit cold mud into the air. This is no special effect — these are the mud volcanoes of Gobustan, and Azerbaijan has more of them than any country on Earth. On this easy half-day Baku mud volcanoes tour you'll walk right up to the bubbling craters and watch one of the planet's most surreal natural shows.
What Exactly Is a Mud Volcano?
Despite the name, there's no lava and no heat. Underground gas pushes a slurry of water, clay and minerals to the surface, building small cones that bubble continuously and occasionally erupt. The mud is cool to the touch and famously rich in minerals — locals have prized it for the skin for generations.
The Experience
The largest accessible field sits on the Gobustan plain just south of Baku, a short walk from where we park. You're free to wander between the cones, listen to them pop, and take photographs that look like they came from another planet. It's relaxed, flat and suitable for all ages.
Best Time to Visit
The mud volcanoes are open year-round and look striking in any weather, but spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures for wandering the open plain. Mornings are calm and quiet, with soft light that's perfect for photography; summer afternoons can be hot and exposed, so bring water, sun protection and sturdy shoes. After rain the ground turns slippery, which only adds to the otherworldly atmosphere — your guide will keep you to the safe paths.
