Shamakhi tours from Baku reach one of Azerbaijan's oldest towns in under two hours — the former capital of the Shirvanshahs, its 8th-century Juma Mosque, and the hill country where the road begins its climb into the Greater Caucasus. Every tour below includes hotel pickup, transport and a guide.

How far is Shamakhi from Baku?

125 km, about an hour and three quarters each way on a good road. That is roughly the halfway mark on the drive to Gabala (225 km), which explains why Shamakhi appears on so many itineraries: it is the natural first stop on the way north-west rather than a place you give a whole day to. From Heydar Aliyev Airport it is 135 km, a little under two hours.

What there is to see

• The Juma Mosque — the main reason to stop. First founded in the 8th century and carefully restored, it is one of the oldest mosques in the entire Caucasus, and it stands among quiet hills rather than in a busy town centre.
• The Shirvanshah capital — Shamakhi was the seat of the Shirvanshah dynasty long before Baku was, and the hillside shrines and old cemeteries around the town are what survive of it.
• The Yeddi Gumbaz mausoleum — the "seven domes", burial place of the Shirvan khans. We include it on private itineraries only, where there is time to give it a proper stop.
• The alpaca farm — a working farm in the Shamakhi hills, and the one thing here that is a destination in its own right rather than a stop along the way. A particular hit with children.
• The road itself — climbing out of the Caspian lowland into the foothills is a real part of the day, and beyond Shamakhi it runs on through the Ismayilli forest and across the Zernava suspension bridge if you continue toward Gabala.

Ways to see Shamakhi

• In one day, with Gabala: the Gabala & Shamakhi day tour — the Juma Mosque first, then the Zernava bridge, the Seven Beauties waterfall and the Tufandag cable car. This is the trip most people book.
• Shamakhi at an easy pace: the alpaca farm tour is a private half-day in the Shamakhi hills, and the only tour here that does not carry on to Gabala.
• Over two days: the Gabala & Sheki 2-day tour takes the same Shamakhi road on day one and sleeps in Sheki for the UNESCO Khan's Palace; the Gabala horse riding 2-day tour swaps day two for the Laza trails.
• As part of a longer trip: the 5-day Azerbaijan tour covers Shamakhi and Gabala on day three, then Sheki and the Shahdag mountains.

Can you visit Shamakhi on its own?

You can, but we would usually talk you out of it. There is perhaps an hour and a half of sightseeing in the town against three and a half hours in the car, which is why every guided tour we run pairs Shamakhi with Gabala or Ismayilli instead of turning back. The exception is the alpaca farm, which is a destination in itself and works well as a half-day. If you do want Shamakhi alone, a private transfer lets you set your own schedule.

When to go

Shamakhi sits higher and cooler than Baku, so summer here is comfortable when the city is not. Spring and autumn are the best of the year — green hills in May, warm colour in October, and far fewer people at the mosque. Winter is quiet and genuinely cold, and snow occasionally affects the higher stretches of the road on toward Gabala; we will tell you before your date if conditions have changed.

Tour or private transfer?

A guided tour includes the driver, the guide and a planned route, and is the better choice if you want the Shirvanshah history explained rather than just photographed. A private Baku to Shamakhi transfer is priced by the journey rather than per seat, which suits a family with luggage, anyone staying at a hotel in the region, or a day where you would rather stop when you feel like it.
