How far is Gabala from Baku?

About 225 km, or roughly three and a quarter hours of driving each way, through Shamakhi and up into the foothills. That distance shapes the whole decision: a day trip means around six and a half hours in the car. It works well if you leave early and are content to see two or three things properly, and it feels rushed if you try to fit in more.

What there is to see

• The Tufandag cable car — the main draw, lifting you out of the valley to viewpoints over the forest. Most people find three to four hours enough for the cable car and the waterfall together.
• The Seven Beauties waterfall (Yeddi Gozel) — a short climb beside the falls, and an easy pairing with the cable car on the same afternoon.
• The Vandam valley and Nohur — worth the drive for the scenery, with one honest caveat: shoreline access at Nohur Lake is restricted at present. We do not sell this trip on the promise of standing at the water.
• The road itself — Shamakhi, the vineyards and the Zernava suspension bridge all sit on or near the route, which is why most Gabala day trips include at least one stop on the way.

One day or two?

A single day is enough for the cable car, the waterfall and a stop in Shamakhi on the way — that is the trip most people book, and it is a long but satisfying day. Give it two if you want the valley as well, or if you would rather not spend six hours of your day sitting in a car. An overnight in Gabala also opens up Sheki, which is only 90 km further on and is a genuinely different place: a Silk Road town with a UNESCO-listed khan's palace.

When to go

Summer is the obvious season and the reason many people come — Gabala is noticeably cooler than Baku when the city is at its hottest. Autumn is quieter and the forest colour is the best of the year. Winter brings snow and a ski season at the higher resorts, though mountain roads can be affected; we will tell you honestly before your date if conditions have changed. Spring is green and wet, and the waterfalls are at their fullest.
