Gabala in Winter: Tufandag Snow, Cable Car Prices and Getting There from Baku
A winter guide to Gabala: what Tufandag offers in the snow, official cable car and ski pass prices, what to wear, and how to get there from Baku in a day or overnight.
Once snow settles on the slopes above Gabala, the town becomes the easiest place in Azerbaijan to put children in front of real winter: Tufandag Mountain Resort, 4 km from the centre, lifts you by cable car to 1,920 m, has gentle runs for first-timers next to steep ones for experts, and lists sledges and tubes for anyone who would rather play than ski. Gabala lies 225 km from Baku, about 3 hours 15 minutes by road, so it can be done in one long day, though a night in the region buys you a full day on the snow. All resort prices below are copied from Tufandag's own website as published on 7 October 2026.

What Tufandag is
Tufandag is the mountain resort that sits directly above Gabala, on the southern side of the Greater Caucasus. It works all year, but winter is its high season. Four lifts climb from the valley floor at 956 m to the top station at 1,920 m, and the official tourism board puts the total length of pistes at about 12 km, with snow-making guns along them. The resort runs two hotels of its own, so you can sleep close to the lifts. Azerbaijan's other big ski area, Shahdag, is a separate trip in a different part of the country.
The four lifts
- Riverside — the long one, 2,500 m, from 956 m up to 1,660 m.
- Gabala — 1,000 m, between 1,251 m and 1,660 m.
- Duruja — 1,170 m, from 1,251 m to 1,410 m.
- Yatmish Gozal — 1,130 m, from 1,410 m to the summit station at 1,920 m.

What you can do in the snow
Ride the cable car for the view
You do not have to ski to go up. A sightseeing ticket covers either the first two lines (Riverside and Gabala peak) or all four, the full ride ending at 1,920 m with the whole snowy ridge of the Caucasus in front of you. This is the part most families come for: warm cabins, a white world outside the glass, and snowballs at the top.
Ski or snowboard
The resort marks its runs from a dedicated beginner area up to expert slopes, and beginners get a magic carpet and a drag lift of their own, so nobody has to start on the main chairs. Tufandag runs its own ski school and rental shop; book those at the resort, as it does not publish their prices online. On Saturdays there is also night skiing.
Sledges, tubes and snowmobiles
For children, and for adults who just want to slide, the resort lists sledging, tubing, a toboggan and snowmobile rides among its winter activities. Outside the season these show as "coming soon", so ask at the ticket desk what is running on the day.
Season and opening hours
Tufandag does not publish fixed opening and closing dates for winter: the lifts and runs open when the snow is good enough, and its home page shows in real time how many of the four lifts and which slopes are working. Look at it the day before you travel. On 7 October 2026 the two-line cable car ride was listed as open 10:30–17:30; winter hours may be different. If snow is the whole point of your trip, keep the date flexible rather than fixing it months ahead.

Nohur Lake and the Vandam valley in winter
Nohur Lake, the reservoir in the Vandam valley a short drive from Gabala, is the picture most people have of the region. Lakeside access is restricted at present — plan your winter day around the valley rather than the shore. In the cold months Vandam is quiet: bare walnut groves, smoke from village chimneys, and white peaks behind the forest — a good half-hour drive between the town and the mountain. Our Nohur Lake and Vandam valley guide explains what you can see there and how the lake differs from Garanohur.
Weather and what to wear
Baku in winter is mild and windy; the top of Tufandag is a different climate, and the gap catches visitors out. Pack as for a proper mountain day even if you are only riding the cable car: a warm waterproof jacket, gloves and a hat, waterproof boots with grip (the paths around the stations can be icy), and sunglasses, because sun on snow at altitude is bright. Children feel the cold first, so bring a spare layer for them. For month-by-month planning across the country, see the best time to visit Azerbaijan.
Getting to Gabala from Baku in winter
By private transfer
The road runs west through Shamakhi and Ismayilli: 225 km, about 3 hours 15 minutes in normal conditions. After fresh snow, allow extra time on the hill sections. A Baku to Gabala transfer takes you door to door with your skis or the children's gear in the boot, and the driver can drop you at the resort rather than in town.
By bus or train
Daily buses leave the Baku International Bus Terminal for Gabala, and there is a passenger train to Gabala station — but the station lies in the village of Hajialili, some 24.5 km out of Gabala, and a taxi is still needed for the last stretch to the slopes. Check current times and fares on avtovagzal.az and ticket.ady.az.
On a guided day
Our Gabala and Shamakhi day tour (about 12 hours) ends at the Tufandag cable car after stops at the Shamakhi Juma Mosque and the Seven Beauties waterfall, and the Ismayilli, Lahij and Gabala tour includes the cable car ticket. Both leave from central Baku; hotel pickup is possible, agreed in advance. Check winter dates in the booking calendar on each page.
One day or overnight?
A day trip gives you about three to four hours in Gabala once you subtract the drive — enough for the cable car, a snowball fight and lunch, but short for skiing. If anyone in your group wants a real day on the slopes, stay the night: sleep near the lifts, be at the first lift when it opens, and drive back after lunch the next day. Multi-day travellers can also continue east the following morning, as the Gabala and Sheki 2-day tour does — Tufandag on day one, the Khan's Palace in Sheki on day two. Frequently asked questions
Is there snow in Gabala in winter?
On the mountain, usually yes — winter is Tufandag's high season and its slopes have snow-making. The town itself sits lower and can be green while the upper lifts are white. Nobody can promise snow on a given date, so check the resort's live lift status before you set off.
How much is the Tufandag cable car?
As published on 7 October 2026: ₼20 for adults and ₼15 for children 6–11 for two lines, ₼27 and ₼20 for all four lines up to 1,920 m. Children under 6 ride free.
Can non-skiers enjoy Tufandag?
Yes. The cable car ride to the top station is the main attraction for most visitors, and the resort lists sledging, tubing and snowmobile rides as winter activities.
How far is Gabala from Baku?
225 km by road, roughly 3 hours 15 minutes, via Shamakhi and Ismayilli. Tufandag is a further 4 km from the town centre.
Is Gabala in winter a good day trip from Baku?
For the cable car and the snow, yes, if you start early. For skiing, an overnight stay works better, because the drive takes more than six hours of the day.
Can I visit Nohur Lake in winter?
Lakeside access is restricted at present, while the Vandam valley around it stays open and makes a quiet winter drive between Gabala and the mountain.
