Eurovision in Baku: How the 2012 Song Contest Reshaped the City

Eurovision Baku 2012 turned the city into the most-watched place in Europe for a week. Azerbaijan hosted the Eurovision Song Contest for the first and so far only time, and the arena built for it — the faceted, glowing Baku Crystal Hall — still sits on the shore of Baku Bay, visible from the Boulevard and from the water.

How Azerbaijan Won the Right to Host

The road to Baku started in Düsseldorf. At the 2011 contest, the duo Ell & Nikki — Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal — performed "Running Scared" and won, giving Azerbaijan its first Eurovision victory just four years after the country's debut in the competition. Under Eurovision's rules the winning country hosts the following year, and the 2012 contest came to Baku.

Baku Crystal Hall: An Arena Built in Nine Months

Azerbaijan had no venue large enough, so it built one. Construction on Baku Crystal Hall began in August 2011 and finished in April 2012 — roughly nine months from empty ground to finished arena, with the official opening on 7 May, just over two weeks before the first semi-final.

• Architects: the German firm GMP International, with Alpine Bau Deutschland as main contractor and Nüssli handling the temporary structures.
• Capacity: around 12,000 seated, or up to roughly 27,000 with standing room.
• Cost: widely reported at about USD 350 million.
• The façade: a crystalline steel-and-mesh skin carrying some 12,000 LED points, so the whole building can be lit as a single animated surface.

That façade is the reason the building reads so differently by day and by night. In daylight it is a pale geometric shell beside National Flag Square; after dark it becomes a screen.

The 2012 Contest

The 57th Eurovision Song Contest ran across three nights — semi-finals on 22 and 24 May and the final on 26 May 2012 — with 42 countries taking part. The slogan was "Light Your Fire!", a nod to Azerbaijan's old name as the Land of Fire.

The shows were hosted by Leyla Aliyeva, Eldar Gasimov (back on the Eurovision stage a year after winning it) and Nargiz Birk-Petersen. Sweden's Loreen won with "Euphoria", topping both the juries and the public televote with 372 points — one of the most decisive victories in the contest's history. Azerbaijan's own entry, Sabina Babayeva with "When the Music Dies", finished fourth.

What Eurovision Left Behind

The contest is the reason a large stretch of Baku's eastern seafront looks the way it does. Crystal Hall anchored the redevelopment around National Flag Square, and the wider clean-up of the old refinery district into what is now White City ran alongside it. For a lot of the audience watching in 2012, the postcards of the Flame Towers and the illuminated bay were the first time they had seen Baku at all.

The arena did not go quiet afterwards. It hosted Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Shakira in its first year, then events at the 2015 European Games and the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships, and UFC on ABC in 2025.

There is no standing tour of the interior — it opens for events. But the building is a landmark you will see repeatedly, and the best view of it is from the water.
