Yanardag — the Mountain That Never Stops Burning

On a low hillside just north of Baku, a wall of natural flame has burned without pause for as long as anyone can remember. This is Yanardag, the "Burning Mountain", and it is the single clearest answer to a question every visitor asks: why is Azerbaijan called the Land of Fire? Our short, easy Yanardag tour from Baku brings you right up to the flames, with the geology and the legends explained, and one of the country's most striking photographs to take home.

Why Does Yanardag Burn?

The fire is fed by natural gas seeping up through the porous sandstone and igniting at the surface. Unlike the famous mud volcanoes or the oil fields, Yanardag's flames are constant — a metre or two high, flickering along the base of the hill day and night, in rain and snow alike. Travellers have written about Azerbaijan's "eternal fires" for over a thousand years, and this is the most accessible of them all.

What the Visit Is Like

There is a small, well-made visitor centre and museum that tells the story of fire worship and the region's Zoroastrian heritage, plus viewing terraces right beside the flames. The whole stop is relaxed and family-friendly — no hiking, no difficulty, just a short walk from the car park to the fire. It is mesmerising at any hour, but truly magical at dusk, when the flames glow against the darkening hillside.

Good to Know

Yanardag is an outdoor site, so dress for the weather — it can be breezy on the hillside even in summer, and the flames feel especially warming on a cool evening. There is a café and a gift shop at the visitor centre, and the short, paved path makes the site easy for all ages and comfortable in any season.

Make It a Full Day

Yanardag pairs perfectly with the nearby Ateshgah Fire Temple — two faces of the same fire heritage, fifteen minutes apart. Want to see everything the region offers in a single day? Our Gobustan & Absheron Tour combines Yanardag, the Fire Temple, the ancient Gobustan petroglyphs and the bubbling mud volcanoes into one unforgettable trip.
